American flight controllers are more and more seeking second jobs and reporting ill, as they remain on duty unpaid amid the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has stated.

"These professionals are wearing thin," Sean Duffy informed a news outlet on Sunday, as certain aircraft were grounded on the Californian coast due to personnel deficits.

Following the federal closure on 1 October, flight controllers, who are deemed critical staff, were instructed to keep doing their jobs uncompensated.

But some have been missing, leading airports to stop or slow their flight operations, which has exacerbated setbacks due to climate and other issues.

More than three thousand US flights were postponed on the weekend, and the secretary said he anticipates the situation to grow worse.

"I observe the stress," Duffy remarked in an discussion on a weekend program, noting that he had spoken to several controllers to listen to their worries firsthand.

"They're taking side jobs, they're out there looking, 'Should I drive Uber, can I find an alternative of earnings to cover expenses?'" he added.

The secretary added that on Saturday 22 alerts at airfields indicated travel would be held up due to a shortage of workers - one of the highest after the closure started.

The US government shutdown entered its 26th day on Sunday, making it the second-longest halt in the past.

He has repeatedly warned that flight authorities would slow down the quantity of aircraft in the air if there is a shortage of safety personnel.

In his interview, he declined to respond directly when questioned if it was safe to travel by air in the United States, and instead issued a direct appeal to controllers.

"I need my staff concentrating on the airspace, not on the monetary matters at their households," the official said.
