An Tale of Unexpected Generosity: The Time a University Student Allowed Me to Sleep on Her Dormitory Floor
Back in 2006, My journey took me to Canberra for an interview at a medical college. I figured to book a place to stay upon arrival, but once I got there, a big convention was happening and every single budget hostels and affordable lodging were completely sold out.
As a visitor from the city-state of Singapore, I considered maybe I could bed down in the airport – but quickly found Canberra airport, unlike Singapore’s, closes 24 hours. With no idea quite what to do and growing worried, I boarded public transport and began walking towards the casino, thinking it was a place to spend the night in a place that stayed open all night. This was not ideal at my peak to succeed at a crucial interview the next day, however, being a cash-strapped student, luxury accommodation was impossible.
We could all use more individuals with such compassion.
It seems I seemed lost because a young woman spotted me wandering around downtown and inquired if everything was alright. I shared the story of my accommodation crisis and immediately she said I was welcome to sleep on the floor at her university residence at the Australian National University – which was perfect, as that’s where my medical school interview was scheduled for the next day. She went further by offering me some free dinner: one of the filled rolls she had from her evening job. I had access to the bathroom and a secure location and secure for the evening.
Looking back, I can appreciate what a big chance she undertook being a woman letting a guy she had only just encountered sleep on her floor. Back then I was in my own unawareness and did not consider to the potential danger. Now, as a father, it astounds me she took that chance – and remain incredibly thankful.
Ultimately, I did not go to ANU, and I never saw that kind stranger again, yet her memory has stayed with me her selfless deed of generosity. It is my wish karma has returned her good deed tenfold. We could all use more folks like that woman.
