A trio of officers were killed and at least 15 others got wounded in a seemingly deliberate gas explosion at a country home in the northern part of Italy.

Sequence of Events

The detonation was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel approached the property near the Verona region to enforce an court-ordered eviction for three siblings who were older adults.

All three victims who died served in the Carabinieri force.

Investigation Developments

Two individuals were taken into custody at the location and another man who fled subsequent to the incident was found soon after. Each of them have been transported to hospital.

The blast could be heard as far as 3 miles distant and footage from the location showed the structure left as a heap of debris.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who noted that efforts had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the previous occasions.

Background and Motive

The leader of the Veneto area, the regional head, explained the farmhouse was under an court order due to debts incurred by the siblings.

Negotiators had been assigned to speak to the siblings who had locked themselves into the property. When the officers reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think a family member caused the blast.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” regional commander the police commander informed reporters.

A gas canister had been set off, and the detonation directly hit our officers,” he explained.

Petrol bombs were also found at the residence, the Interior Minister said.

Injuries and Destruction

Those injured by the explosion consisted of an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as three members of the state police and a emergency responder.

Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.

The official believed the detonation had taken place on a floor above the access point and informed journalists it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Just prior to the incident, he said personnel had “noticed a hissing sound, presumably the gas cylinders being turned on”.

Community Reaction

“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors told reporters, mentioning that the three had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Defence Minister Minister Crosetto united with other elected representatives in commemorating the three officers who had been killed in the line of duty.
