Information Available Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 people were killed and over 40 were hurt when assailants opened fire at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident local police have called a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were admitted to the hospital.

The deceased are still awaiting formally identified, but authorities state their ages are between 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the individuals who have been identified to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends remembered him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She described the events leading up to the shooting, saying they were standing when the gunfire began. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, a senior official declared that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with five in a critical state. Those hurt include two police officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
