Lando Norris Advances Nearer to Title as Verstappen Claims Vegas F1 Race Win

Race action

The McLaren driver currently holds a thirty point advantage over fellow driver Oscar Piastri with only fifty-eight points up for grabs in the remaining events

McLaren's Lando Norris moved closer to his first championship with second place in the Vegas race following the Red Bull of Max Verstappen

The British driver now leads fellow McLaren driver Oscar Piastri, who finished fourth behind the Mercedes of George Russell, by 30 points heading to the second-to-last race in Qatar next weekend

Norris will secure the championship in the desert as long as he does not lose over five points to Piastri in Losail, or seventeen to Verstappen

The Australian driver, so impressive in the first half of the championship, has failed to finish on the top three for six consecutive events

"Max had a strong performance. I erred at the beginning and was overly aggressive on that first turn," stated Norris

"It remains a good result to get second place. I've got to praise Max and Red Bull"

Following Qatar, the last event of the season follows in Abu Dhabi on December 7th

The main developments of among Formula 1's most prestigious races included:

  • Lando Norris maintained his momentum towards the title despite the victory to Verstappen

  • Oscar Piastri's difficult performance streak continued as his title hopes diminish

  • A superb win for Verstappen to keep him in the title fight

  • Fightbacks for both Ferrari drivers, following a difficult qualifying session, with Lewis Hamilton securing a point for tenth place following beginning at the rear

Max Verstappen Stays in Championship Contention

Race start

Verstappen overtakes Lando Norris at the beginning following the McLaren driver went off line at the opening turn

From the beginning, Norris was true to his claim that he was "not here to avoid risks" as he battled aggressively to protect his advantage from starting first from Verstappen

But after an aggressive cut in front of the Red Bull driver to head off the Verstappen's challenge on the inner line, Norris miscalculated his braking point and ran deep into the turn

This enabled Max Verstappen to overtake into the lead while Norris also the runner-up spot to George Russell

During two VSC periods for some early incidents, featuring at the start when the Racing Bulls Liam Lawson made contact with Piastri, Verstappen slowly stamped his authority on the race

George Russell made an early pit stop for the hard tyres, but Norris and Verstappen remained on track

Norris pitted five laps after the Mercedes and Verstappen 10

Verstappen was could rejoin still in the first place, Russell having been unable to catch up on the Red Bull car despite his fresher tyres

Lando Norris rejoined behind Russell from his pit stop but after a several careful circuits to let his tyres to warm up, soon closed his 3.3-second deficit to the Mercedes driver and overtook into runner-up position on lap 34

The British driver asked his race engineer how to run the rest of his race, essentially questioning whether he should settle for second place or attack

He was told to "go and get Max" but it soon became clear he had little opportunity. Max Verstappen was easily able to defend against Lando's challenges, and in the closing stages the margin increased significantly as the McLaren car began to experience a technical issue which has thus far remained unidentified

Even with losing almost three seconds a circuit, Lando Norris was able to defend against George Russell because of the size of the advantage he had established while pursuing Verstappen

The Red Bull driver's sixth win of the championship - just one less than the two McLaren teammates - was taken in dominant fashion and keeps him in championship contention, at minimum mathematically, even if he needs issues for Lando Norris in both remaining races to overtake him

"It remains a big gap, we always try to optimize everything we've got," Max Verstappen said

"During the coming events we will try to take victory in the event and at the end of Abu Dhabi we will see where we finish, but I'm extremely pleased of everyone"

Disappointing Race' for Oscar Piastri

Oscar Piastri began in fifth but lost two places on the first circuit after being clouted by Liam Lawson, who was soon taken out of contention by a broken front wing

He trailed Lawson's teammate Isack Hadjar for the opening fifteen circuits before passing him on the Strip but lost position to Charles Leclerc, who he was able to overtake again during the pit-stop period

Piastri finished after the Mercedes of Kimi Antonelli, who competed nearly the entire race on the durable compound following pitting during the first virtual safety car, but was given a five-second penalty for a start-line infringement, which was not immediately obvious on video reviews

"It proved to be a frustrating race from essentially start to finish in some ways," Oscar Piastri told race broadcasters

Asked about how he would tackle the remaining events, he commented: "Simply try to position myself in the optimal situation I can. I obviously need quite a lot of factors to go my way at this stage to win, but all I can do is make myself in the best position to take advantage if circumstances change"

Leclerc held on in sixth place, not close enough to benefit from Antonelli's penalty, while Sainz fell to seventh at the finish, his Williams car lacking the speed to compete with the top teams in the dry conditions, following his heroic performance to qualify in third in the wet

Isack Hadjar took eighth place before Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg and Lewis Hamilton

The seven-time title winner executed a strong getaway, rising to 13th on the opening circuit and continued to advance positions

He got stuck in a slipstream group with a bunch of additional vehicles but was able to employ his electric start to rescue a point following the poorest qualifying session of his racing life
