The direst possible consequences of the global heating for the UK have been outlined by scientists, including a blistering 4C jump in average temperatures to a two-metre increase in sea levels. Another scenario envisions a drop of 6C in temperature following the shutdown of critical Atlantic Ocean currents, which would massively disrupt food production and power requirements.

Credible Outcomes, Not Guarantees

These impacts, certain ones are connected to irreversible climate shifts, are seen as improbable but plausible. The team said that these models filled a gap in forecasting that had left the UK not ready for catastrophic possibilities.

"The climate extremes we have detailed aren’t predictions, but they are credible," stated the professor who directed the research. "Britain has been planning lacking the tools to plan for catastrophic outcomes. We've now supplied decision-makers what they need to plan for environmental results they hope never happen, but dare not dismiss."

A Range of Severe Conditions Possibilities

Another collection of dire projections details the projected severity of harsh climate between now and the end of the century. These suggest that thermometer readings could soar in particular seasons by up to 6C higher than historical levels, while rainfall could be 300% of typical amounts.

The probability of the extreme scenarios occurring cannot be precisely determined due to unknown factors about what measures will be enacted to address global warming and how the Earth's systems will react. This approach was compared to security threat evaluations or stress tests for economic stability.

Major Scenario Elements

• Four-Degree Warming: Global temperatures exceeding 4C by 2100 could transpire if emissions cuts collapses or if strong feedback loops like the tropical forests becoming a net carbon source unleash its huge repository of carbon. This would lead to severe and lengthy heatwaves and droughts hitting the UK in summer.
• Ocean Circulation Failure: A major ocean current, the North Atlantic current, is slowing down and losing stability due to global heating. A full shutdown starting around 2030 would lead to a drastic cooling in the UK. "Farming would struggle enormously and water resources would be completely altered," explained the professor.
• Sudden Ocean Inundation: A surge of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could happen if glaciers in the polar regions disintegrate quickly, submerging coastal cities and towns. In contrast to the other scenarios, this threat is already understood by planners.
• Aerosol Effect: Global averages could also be pushed higher by about 0.75C if airborne particulates is drastically reduced. This unexpected result occurs because tiny specks from industrial activity reflect sunlight from reaching the ground.

Planning for the Worst

The worst-case scenarios could be used to inform the building of long-term infrastructure, such as housing developments, power generation facilities and urban drainage systems. Understanding these environmental threats could also speed the drive to reduce carbon pollution.

The analysis formulated the extreme models using a blend of observed and historical experience, computer simulations and climate physics. These outcomes omit potential global problems such as the agricultural collapse and resource wars.

The research was requested as part of a government’s climate resilience programme. Independent analyses have stated that not enough attention was being given to low‐likelihood but high‐impact risks.

The government's climate advisors has recommended that the UK must "become resilient to moderate heating" and evaluate the risks for four degrees. Earlier government strategies have been described as being "very weak" by certain experts.
