Martin Compston are set to reprise their characters in the acclaimed crime series

The acclaimed crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh installment, confirmed by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-part series written by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Belfast in the coming months, according to the network.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together soon."

The previous season wrapped up in recent years with a finale that attracted over 17 million viewers. Rumors about a potential return have been widespread for some time, but confirmation only came this week.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

Series seven will open with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings continue working to tackle corruption within the police force.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio are assigned their "most sensitive case to date."

New Character and Complex Case

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to act as a offender.

However, this investigation might serve as a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still operating in the background, the teaser hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had so many fans track the ups and downs of the unit over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new installment."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston described appearing in the series as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the show's success but the people I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.

Vicky McClure remarked: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "As we count down the unit days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming soon."

"Pleased with the announcement and looking forward to those mercurial plot developments."

Show History

The drama launched in 2012 and became one of the most popular television series of the last decade, attracting notable actors such as Stephen Graham.

Broadcasters has not yet announced exactly the upcoming series will premiere.

The finale of series six brought the long-running storyline about the search for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and producers indicated at the moment there were no intentions for further series.

However, the corporation confirmed on Tuesday that a new season is now in development.
