The retail giant Implements Buying Restrictions on Pokémon Trading Cards
In a significant move, Walmart has started enforcing strict limits on how many Pokémon trading card items customers can acquire during a single visit. This policy officially takes effect as of early November, based on a company memo distributed to employees.
Addressing Scalper Activity
While not officially confirmed by Walmart, many believe this decision was prompted by a viral TikTok video that showed a customer buying a massive amount of Pokémon card products at a checkout counter. The store manager seen in the video received widespread backlash for permitting the bulk transaction to go through.
Rule Specifics and Possible Weaknesses
The updated guideline states that shoppers may only buy up to five trading card boxes or packs per store visit. However, the wording has sparked debate due to its lack of clarity. Precisely what counts as a "box" is not defined, and if someone could buy five premium Elite Trainer Boxes is uncertain.
Additionally, because the restriction is tied to individual trips, in theory a determined scalper could make multiple trips—purchasing the maximum each time—to accumulate significant stocks over several hours.
The Scalping Phenomenon
To most players, such efforts might seem over the top, yet for resellers, it's common behavior. Over the past few seasons, speculators have significantly added to widespread shortages of Pokémon cards, spurred by the game's rising popularity.
Some resellers aim to sell unopened products at a markup, while others search for valuable pulls that can fetch extraordinary prices. As an example, the Mega Lucario ex card in recent releases has been listed at prices exceeding eight hundred dollars on various platforms.
Looking Ahead
This policy change aligns with the approaching launch of the Phantasmal Flames set, coming on November 14th. Pre-release sales already show chase cards like the Charizard mega evolution listed for around fifteen hundred dollars, emphasizing the ongoing demand and likely reseller attention.
With any luck, the retail limits will curb mass buying and increase access for genuine collectors and casual players as well.
