We are verifying video footage and photographs posted this morning that depict the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials state fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he later died of his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to check the location from which the pictures were from was based on social media reports saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex captured in the video.
Identifying additional structures, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the pictures were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
